Reminding me of my youth on the coast of Kent &#8211; Sandwich Bay Seasalter and the Shellhavens all in one, this wonderful entry thatcelebrating the natural beauty of sand dunes and native vegetation is my winner at Hampton Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had been called to the Hampton Court Show to do a small local press call for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordgreenroofs.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Oxford Green Roof Company (opens in a new tab)\">Oxford Green Roof Company<\/a>. Leaving their excellent entry with its various small scale green roofs, I stumble upon this apparently natural piece of sand dune, amidst the adornment, decoration and human designed gardens of the rest of the Hampton Court Garden Show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2846.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2846.jpg\" alt=\"Hampton Court - Sand Dune Garden\" class=\"wp-image-1534 lazyload\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 480px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 480\/320;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2846.jpg\" alt=\"Hampton Court - Sand Dune Garden\" class=\"wp-image-1534\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><figcaption>Hampton Court &#8211; Sand Dune Garden<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed by three students from University College&nbsp; Falmouth &#8211; Sue Radmore, Elektra Sanders, Scarlet Wheaton &#8211; the entry is entitled&nbsp; &#8216;A Fable for Tomorrow&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love what the three students state as the concept and the aims of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/Shows-Events\/Hampton-Court-Palace-Flower-Show\/2010\/Gardens\/A-to-Z\/A-Fable-for-Tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"project (opens in a new tab)\">project<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8216;Our native flora is under pressure and many species are teetering on the brink of extinction. Helping to save those in danger and preserve biodiversity are seed banks, modern day Noah\u2019s Arks for plants.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This garden comprises an old Cornish seed bank that has been split in half to reveal its treasures, which are held back by great rusty steel walls. Some seeds have spilled out to germinate around pools that reflect light from the copper core. Others have colonised the hill itself as they might do in the wild.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2847.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2847.jpg\" alt=\"Sand Dune Garden at Hampton Court\" class=\"wp-image-1535 lazyload\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 480px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 480\/320;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dustygedge.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img_2847.jpg\" alt=\"Sand Dune Garden at Hampton Court\" class=\"wp-image-1535\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><figcaption>Sand Dune Garden at Hampton Court<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I identified numerous plants form botanising on the Kent Coast as a youth and many plants associated with green roofs in London and elsewhere in London, Kidney vetch, Thrift, Vipers Bugloss and Bird&#8217;s Foot Trefoil to name a few. I also love the realism of the garden.
