Plants and Beasts – Swiss Green roof
by Dusty ~ August 27th, 2010. Filed under: Green Roof News.Just been rummaging through this years pictures on iphoto and came across this group. They were taken on a green roof in Emmen Switzerland. I have already blogged about this roof. Nature happening on a green roof, their are probably over 50 species of plants on the roof and it was certainly a draw for the local bees and butterflies.[singlepic id=485 w=200 h=500 float=center]
Common toadflax is an important green roof plant. And it is a real delight to the eye.

Poppies and other annuals can attract a wide range of insects. I always plant annuals on a green roof. After the first few years they disappear. However if gets very dry and the substrate breaks up, the dormant seeds will re-germinate.

This blue butterfly was one of many hawking and dancing across the green roof. Pretty sure it is a Common blue – but not 100% certain as I am not au fait with continental butterflies.

An finally the Scabious a rather harsh name for such a beautiful plant. A real pleasure to see on a green roof and one to definitely plant or seed.
