Alberta Butterflies 2 – Greenish Blue
by Dusty ~ August 14th, 2010. Filed under: On The Road, Other Ramblings. The Blues are difficult enough to identify in the UK. Trying to identify North American ones is a real task, especially when you are back on this side of the pond. I am grateful for a twitter dialogue with Carole Brown, @CB4wildlife. Carole runs a great website on gardening for wildlife. It’s title is great – Ecosystem Gardening and well worth a look. Anyway she suggest my blue butterfly, hanging out amongst the Canadian Tiger Swallowtails was a a Summer Azure…[singlepic id=441 w=320 h=240 float=center]
Although I now think Carole’s id was wrong, She had put me on the trail. Given me a lead. A bit research suggested that Summer Azure is not found in Alberta. But Greenish Blue is. So I am going with this at the moment. As Carole pointed out on twitter ‘blues are difficult’. So if anyone thinks that this butterfly is not a Greenish Blue could they let me know.

This solitary individual was seen in a woodland glade at Beaverhill Bird Observatory near Tofield, Alberta.
