Cowslips and Sand mounds on a green roof, London

Spring is now on us and this excellent green roof installed in London is starting to bloom. Although much of the seeds and plug plants are yet to bloom, a few Cowslips are already raising their heads to the London Sky to attract bees from around the immediate vicinity.

Installed by BHC – a UK based green roof company with years of experience in both biodiverse, green and brown roofs, the roof is part of a long term study of green roofs and biodiversity. The study, has been funded by SITA Nature Enhanced and is a partnership project between livingroofs.org Ltd and Buglife.

The design by the Green Roof Consultancy, also includes small mounds of sand around, around which crocuses have been planted. It is hoped that this will attract nesting Andrena sp, otherwise known as sand bees. The bulbs provide a beacon for the bees to locate their nest holes, which in turn can attract the Cuckoo bees, which parasite on sand bees.
