Washington DC – Living green roof project

Spent a few days in DC building a green roof as part of the Folklife Festival. I had been invited by my good friend Blanche as part of the Centre for Alternative Technology. We used the principles as outlined in John and my DIY Guide [link].

It was hot hot hot building green roofs on the Mall.

Ed Snodgrass of greenroofplants joined us on Saturday to plant the roof. He had kindly donated  a mix of sedums and native North American flowers. All the materials were donated  by Conservation Technology in Baltimore.

Logs and welsh stone were added to the roof to give the roof some character and provide additional habitat and shelter for bugs.

We were also joined by David from Oklahoma and Ashleigh from Toronto. It was great talking to people from Louisiana to Indiana, Massachusetts to Florida about green roofs. People were really excited and keen.

Also met up with Sara from dcgreenworks who install a lot of green roofs in the DC area.

Brilliant few days and chance to actually do a project with Ed Snodgrass after all these years.
